Austrian Alps Hang Gliding Rally
“High-Alpine Adventure, Low Stress”
Austrian Michi Friesenbichler, assisted by Curt Warren, guides pilots across the premier gliding sites of Austria in the peak flying season.
When: 5th – 9th of August 2009
The very best month to fly the Austrian Alps
The Region:
The Austrian Alps provides epic mountain flying conditions. The Flug-rally takes advantage of the very best flying conditions for the region, which is August. Every mountain launch offers the chance to fly over 300km. The current world record for longest triangle flight of 407km is from the Greifenburg launch, held by Walter Geppert.
The Flug-Rally tour will kick off here, and will be the first of five monumental flying days.
Day 1: Greifenburg to Zillertal. Gain 4000m to head north by crossing the highest mountain of the Austrian Alps (3798m), landing in the Zillertal valley.

Day 2: Zillertal to Koessen Challenge. A chance to break your personal best. An early launch on the dog-leg course through the famous thermal-rich Pinzgau valley, the task then turns north-west on the way to Koessen.
Day 3: Koessen to Altaussee. Launch near the alpine lake, at the site of the 1985 World hang gliding championships. A scenic flight over mountain glaciers and alpine lakes to arrive in Altaussee, the quaint tourist lake town nestled at the base of the Alps.
Day 4: Altaussee to Zell am See. After an impressive and daunting launch from Mt Loser, the task heads south-east crossing mountain ranges. Turning to the west at Mt. Grimming, for a race on the home stretch to Zell am See.
Zell am See is home to the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, a popular summer ski resort.
Day 5: Zell am See to Greifenburg. Launch from Schmittenhoehe Mountain, a launch renowned for delivering long distance flights. The task heads south, pilots must once again cross the Austrian Alps to return to the starting point, Greifenburg, and celebrate with some Austrian Schweinebraten, Sauerkraut and a Kruegel Bier!
