Novice Training Course Application Process

To apply to Learn to Fly with Warren Windsports please:

  1. Read through this Novice Training Policies page, the FAQs and the Learn to Fly page.
  2. Apply online for a position in the Novice Training Course.
  3. Once your application is accepted, you may pay for a course installment here.

Course fees are to be paid in two installments of $1,250. Most students finish within 2 course installments.

However if additional training is required, additional fees will apply. The course installments allow for a half way time where students have the option to discontinue training if they, or the instructor decide. The course costs are broken down into a credit system whereby costs are deducted from the original course payment.

Hang Gliding School Stanwell Park NSW

Fee Structure**

Weekday Tandem Training Flight $190
Weekend Tandem Training Flight $220
Half Day Practical $150
Full Day Practical * $250
Formal "Ground School" (can be cost-shared ) $30/hour

*Minimum 3 hours
**Prices subject to change without notice

Example scenario for a student A:
7 weekday tandem flights=$1330
3 full-days Practical=$750
10 hours Ground School ($300 but shared by 4 students) =$75
Total: $2155 (with over $300 of lesson-credit available)
Or another example, Student B:
6 weekend tandems=$1320
5 full-days Practical=$1250
10 hours Ground School ($300 shared by 4 students) =$25
Total: $2645 ($95 additional charged.  Note, although most students stay within the $2500)

For instance, Student "A" may require more tandem flights for judging the landing approach, while Student "B" might need an additional day or two for perfecting take-off skills. Also, Student A was available for weekday training, which helped to decrease the amount of lesson credit used, compared with Student B.

This credit system has been created through experience and has proved to give each student more personal instruction and better value for money.

Additional Training Days

While most of our students complete the course in 7-10 days and within the $2500 credit, all students have their own rate of learning. --So the time required to fulfill the course outcomes varies student to student.  Additional payment may be needed for students who need more instruction, and may be done through pay-by the-lesson (as per prices above).

Students who complete the course with credit to spare will have money to go towards their next level of training, be that an aerotowing endorsement, intermediate certificate or one of our many Advanced Training Clinics.

Additional Novice Course Costs

  1. Required Training Manual - Hang Gliding for Beginner Pilots: $60
  2. Required Training Text - The Art of Skysailing Workbook and DVD: $65
  3. After completion, of your course: You will need to be a member of your local club. The Stanwell Park Club membership is $20/year, which also includes FREE membership to all other NSW Hang Gliding Clubs.  The Stanwell Park Club also offers free monthly BBQ's, and occasional educational nights.  You'll also need to sign up as a member with the Hang Gliding Federation of Australia (approx $300/yr), which includes 3rd party insurance and a bi-monthly magazine with membership.

Credit Validity

While training days are flexible, please remember that your course enrollment secures a position for instruction for a period of time, and we will allocate Instructors and equipment accordingly. The lesson fee-credit is valid for one year from date of purchase.

However if a student ceases training for a period of 3 months or more, they may lose their position in the course. Additionally their course credit may be forfeited, so will have to pay additional course costs to complete their training.

Cancellation

Course credit is not refundable, paying the course in installments allows students to only commit to part of the course. So students can discontinue the course between course installments.

Warren Windsports reserves the right to cancel training at any time based on safety concerns.

Student Requirements

Age 14 years or above
Weight Less than 105kg
Health At least equivalent to that required for the issue of a Private Motor Vehicle Drivers Licence within Australia.
Fitness While there is no compulsory level of fitness required, hang gliding training is aided when a student has reasonable levels of strength and fitness, as the training can at times be fairly physical.
Curt recommends swimming, surfing or stand-up paddle boarding as good cross training.

When undertaking training with Warren Windsports, students should be aware of their responsibilities. Students need to maintain their logbooks so that they are always current, and be sure to get your logbook signed by your Instructor regularly. Arrive at lessons on time and prepared to learn and work, be sure to get a good night sleep before. Please be patient if instructors are busy or running behind schedule, often due to the weather.

To every lesson please bring:
  • Suitable clothing for conditions along with sun protection.
  • Food and Water
  • Log book
  • Green Workbook (for Novice training)
Students also need to keep up to date with course theory, and be sure to ask questions or research if there is a concept that you don't understand. Attempt Student Workbook in timely manner – some sections need to be completed prior to certain  phases of practical training, so be sure to take note of this.

Additionally, pilot attitude is so important for safety, please be prepared to assist other students and Instructors to promote safety during lessons.

Pilots and Student Pilots must ensure they have current membership with the HGFA. Rated Pilots must also maintain current membership with any Clubs of the sites at which they fly. All pilots need to familiarise themselves with the local site rules and conditions before they fly, and fly within these rules and conditions at all times.
