Dalby Day 4 & 5: Racing Kicks In

The weather turns it ON for Task 4 and 5 at Dalby.  Most of the hang gliding pilots attending the competition realise we'd better soak up all of these strong-lift days before returning home (NSW, VIC, ACT, SA) where we won't be finding strong conditions like this for months!

Day 2 and 3 of the Dalby Big Air Comp

Flying over Dalby

Task 2 for the Dalby Big Air Comp was 80kms zig-zagging to the west. The mostly cotton farmland below had checkered sunlight, sometimes with large areas of shade that required long slow glides. I saw great pilots working ridiculously hard to make extremely low saves...sometimes getting away (Rohan), and sometimes not hooking in and landing (Jonas).

Top 3 for the day:

  • Lenny Paton
  • Myself
  • Conrad Loten

Task 3 was amazing that we actually got to fly. There were rain patches around the tow-field, but

After a awesome week of hangin out with good friends, having hilarious conversation around the dinner table or camp fire (mainly thanks to John Smith) and some great flying, it has all come to an end. We're already talking about our next trip and brewing up some cool projects for the near future! But for now its time to make some coin.

I left my camera in my harness so today's photos and complements of the baby face assassin(wolf dog).

The cool think about hang gliding is everyday is different and each day one will fly in different modes and experience different air. Today I was in race mode then got low and had to change modes and make a mantra that I repeated non stop it seems like till I made it to goal. So here you have em.

Day 4

Conditions for today didn't look good but the task committee set a 54km down wind task with a sky in complete cloud cover, and a few showers to the east and west. People figured the day wasn't going to get any better some broke down and went to the Pub, others trickled off and sunk out. Many of us wait and wait and waited till Conditions got better and people started soaring and getting up. Jonny Durrand, Dave Seib, Len Payton, Wolf and I got a nice climb at Mt Borah and had a dig at the task..... Jonny, dave and I landed 9KM later beating Len and Wolf who landed at 7km:-)

Manilla Hang Gliding Comp, Day 2-  We didn't fly here as there were not enough options to have a good enough task that was safe, so the day was canceled but pilots were allowed to free fly. My back locked up on day one, soo bad that after landing I had to wait for Wolfi and our driver to pick me up, and then wolf broke down my glider. So I took the day to relax and get my back good again.

Forbes Hang Gliding Champs

Here are our highlights of the recent flying fun on Task 5, 6, 7, and 8 (final task) of the Forbes Flatlands Hang Gliding Competition.

The Warren Windsports Team from Stanwell Park were "in the money", finishing in the top 3 on the last three days of the comp!  In fact, Steve Moyes said that 19 yr old Jonas Lobitz "came of age" at this comp, as he proved he was both willing and capable of going out in front, making his own decisions and then getting to goal with quick times.

One Tow, Two Thermal flight

Hang gliding never gets dull.  Today's flying conditions had moderate winds and choppy turbulence at most levels.  The thermal strengths came and went.

Our teammate, Wolfi Siess, was "the star" (amongst our team) today: second across the goal line, just behind Attilla. He's now raving about the music playing out of his phone in his chest pocket while he flies.  Well, we're hoping he's top 3 for the day, and is "in the prize money"...as we're stopping for dinner on the way home.  Wolfi's buying :)
